Each year, the American Lung Association grants the Hoyt E. Dearholt Distinguished Professional Service Award to a distinguished member of its staff. As the most prestigious award given by the Lung Association, it is presented to a staff member who has made significant and lasting contributions throughout his or her career with the American Lung Association. This year, the Lung Association is happy to announce Paul G. Billings as the recipient of this award.
Since he began his career with the Lung Association in 1991, Paul has diligently worked to propel the organization forward as an organization that fight tobacco and promotes lung health. Paul has worked as an advocate for the American Lung Association on both the state and local levels, and he currently serves as the Vice-President of National Policy and Advocacy at the American Lung Association’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Paul is dedicated to protecting the Clean Air Act. He has consistently pushed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to raise its standards for healthier, pollution-free air. Paul Billings is truly a lung heath hero who proudly carries on the century-old legacy of the many American Lung Association heroes before him. His ongoing efforts help assure a healthier future to those who suffer from asthma and other forms of lung disease.
The Hoyt E. Dearholt Distinguished Professional Service Award honors the memory of its namesake, Hoyt E. Dearholt, M.D., who pioneered efforts to fight the spread of tuberculosis throughout the 1900s. Dr. Dearholt’s devotion to public health continues because of people like Paul Billings. As a true champion for public health, the American Lung Association proudly awards Mr. Billings this distinguished award.
