New Freedom From Smoking Online Launched

(December 15, 2009)

The American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking (FFS) program has helped thousands of people quit smoking and is considered the gold standard for its clinically proven techniques.

Now, busy people can participate in the newly-redesigned Freedom From Smoking Online (www.ffsonline.org) from the comfort and privacy of their home.

The site offers several options, including a free Basic FFS Online membership, which includes a complete, eight-module program.

For minimal cost, a Premium membership includes a greatly expanded eight-module program, access to the FFS Online Community, and other resources such as message boards and downloadable relaxation exercises.

"For many people, quitting smoking is more successful as a shared experience," say Norman Edelman, M.D. American Lung Association Chief Medical Officer.  "For them, connection to the online community and access to the message board could provide the social support they need to quit for good."

The eight-session Freedom From Smoking group clinic program is also offered in many places throughout the country. You can find a group near you by contacting your local American Lung Association.  To find the Lung Associations nearest you, click here.

"Quitting smoking is one of the most important that things you can do for your health," added Dr. Edelman. "Half of adult smokers will die of smoking related causes, so it's important to plan for and set your quit date as soon as possible. The American Lung Association offers the best tools and resources available."
