Christmas Seals® Recapture Vintage Holiday Magic with a Modern Flair

(September 18, 2009)

Lamplighter Christmas Seal Remember the warm and magical feeling of holidays from years gone by? This year, American Lung Association Christmas Seals® have recaptured that special feeling with the retro look of old-time Christmas. And who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? The venerable campaign has literally gone from “lick it and stick it” to “click it and send it,” updating the cherished appeal with modern touches, like e-cards, social media and a festive new web-store, filled with Christmas Seals merchandise.

“Celebrate Another Year” is the theme of this year’s campaign, which uses decorative holiday stickers, or “seals” to raise funds and spread the word about the Lung Association’s fight for healthy lungs and healthy air. The retro theme to this year’s seals and ad campaign uses modern technology to seamlessly recreate vintage seals from the 1940s, 50s and 60’s.

This year’s imaginative and nostalgic Christmas Seals ad campaign has already been turning heads and was the subject of an extended feature in the New York Times.

Although more than 100 years old, Christmas Seals are acting pretty young these days, with videos on YouTube, e-cards you can send  to family and friends, a Facebook application that allows you to share and collect Seals, a new website interactive website and a web-store filled with Christmas Seal-themed goodies to meet holiday wrapping, decorating and gift-giving needs.

The Christmas Seals Campaign is the nation’s oldest direct-mail fundraising campaign, which began in 1907 to combat tuberculosis. Today, the Seals support the Lung Association’s even bigger battle against scores of lung diseases, tobacco use and harmful air pollution.

In the past, you needed to be on a mailing list from the previous year to receive Christmas Seals. But this year, for the first time, you can directly buy this year’s Seals online, and show your support of the Lung Association right away. When you buy Christmas Seals online, or make a donation when you receive a Christmas Seals packet in the mail, you support our fight for air, across the country, and in your own community.

“We are continually thankful for the loyalty of our Christmas Seals supporters, many of whom have given year-after-year for several decades, and in some cases, for half a century,” says Charles D. Connor, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. “We hope that this nostalgic, retro look will appeal to them, while introducing a whole new generation to what is really a great American tradition.”

Throughout its history, the Christmas Seals campaign has been supported by celebrities and entertainers ranging from Bob Hope to the Smothers Brothers. Leading the charge as the 2009 National Celebrity Christmas Seals Chairperson is actress S. Epatha Merkerson. An Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award winner, Ms. Merkerson has won critical acclaim for her brilliant work in theatre, television and film, but is probably best known for her role as Lt. Anita Van Buren on NBC-TV’s “Law & Order.”
