Christmas Seals® - A Lifesaving Holiday Tradition

(October 8, 2010)

2010 Christmas Seal
Celebrate another year and help save lives with Christmas Seals.

Can a little paper stamp help save lives? Christmas Seals® have been doing it for more than 100 years! This year, Christmas Seals are back, with a few new tricks up their sleeves, like e-cards, social media and festive new merchandise. But they still carry the same message that has made them an American holiday tradition – when you buy Christmas Seals, you help the American Lung Association save lives by fighting for healthy air and healthy lungs.

“Celebrate Another Year” is the theme of this year’s campaign, which uses decorative holiday stickers, or “seals” to raise funds and spread the word about the Lung Association’s fight for healthy lungs and healthy air. The retro theme of this year’s seals and ad campaign uses modern technology to seamlessly recreate vintage seals from the 1940s, 50s and 60's.

They may be 100 years old, but Christmas Seals aren’t living in the past. Today you can get into the holiday mood by watching the new Christmas Seals videos on YouTube, you can share e-cards with family and friends, keep up on FaceBook and even Twitter. You can also check out a new interactive website and a web-store filled with Christmas Seal-themed goodies to meet holiday wrapping, decorating and gift-giving needs.

The Christmas Seals Campaign is the nation’s oldest direct-mail fundraising campaign, which began in 1907 to combat tuberculosis. Today, funds raised through Christmas Seals help make it possible for the Lung Association to combat lung cancer, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) childhood asthma, tobacco use, secondhand smoke, air pollution and influenza.

In the past, you needed to be on a mailing list from the previous year to receive Christmas Seals, but now you can directly buy this year’s Seals online and show your support of the Lung Association right away. When you buy Christmas Seals online, or make a donation when you receive a Christmas Seals packet in the mail, you support our fight for air, across the country, and in your own community.

Throughout its history, the Christmas Seals campaign has been supported by celebrities and entertainers ranging from Bob Hope to Will Smith. That tradition continues this year, as Emmy nominated actress Kathryn Joosten leads the charge as the 2010 National Celebrity Christmas Seals Chairperson. Joosten, well known for her roles as Karen McCluskey in Desperate Housewives and for her recurring role in The West Wing as Mrs. Landingham, is a lung cancer survivor, and avid champion of the American Lung Association.

With the holiday season just around the corner, why not “Celebrate Another Year” by supporting Christmas Seals and joining the fight to “stamp out” lung disease.
