Behind the Headlines: Lung Cancer

(May 18, 2012)

The American Lung Association joins the nation in mourning the passing of music legend Donna Summer of lung cancer.  Ms. Summer’s passing has brought renewed attention to a form of cancer that causes more deaths each year than any other cancer.

The American Lung Association is a leader in the fight against lung cancer, and its major cause—smoking—and is a trusted source for educational material and programs on the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, as well as smoking cessation. We also advocate for public policies that have been proven to reduce tobacco use.

Our recent report “Too Many Cases, Too Many Deaths: Lung Cancer in African Americans” examines the disproportionately high rate of lung cancer among African Americans and the need to eliminate this and other health disparities.
