The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Regional Vice President, Development to join our incredible team in California. Working as a member of the Development Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy.

In this role, you will be responsible for management and leadership of all development activities within California. You will be responsible for planning, directing and implementing a comprehensive development program that incorporates nationwide best practices and meets revenue goals to support the mission. You will increase regional unrestricted revenue and guide community engagement through multiple special event activities, corporate and foundation partnerships, individual giving and volunteer development. Working together with national and other regional staff, you will play a critical role in ensuring that organizational, strategic imperatives are achieved through the identification and development of nationwide best practices. In addition to fundraising responsibilities, you will also be charged with staffing and managing the regional board as well as ensuring successful local volunteer recruitment and engagement. Other duties include the identification, cultivation and solicitation of a personal portfolio of individual, corporate and/or foundation prospects.


  • Successfully meet regional revenue goals.
  • Directly manage, hire, train and evaluate all Executive Directors providing them with the tools they need to increase community engagement and achieve revenue goals through effective volunteer and staff infrastructure development, corporate/foundation partnerships and individual constituent engagement.
  • Provide regional and nationwide fundraising tools and strategies as an active member of the Development Leadership Team.
  • Assist in training Executive Directors and other development staff members. Provide mentorship, motivation and leadership to the CA development team. Ensure appropriate division of responsibilities to achieve efficient use of resources and utilization of effort.
  • Hold local development teams accountable for revenue goals.
  • Staff and manage the Regional Board to ensure successful local volunteer engagement and mission impact. Ensure that the Regional Board is high performing and goal oriented with volunteers representing the local markets in the region.
  • In conjunction with Executive Directors and other key staff, develop and support local Leadership Boards – recruit, train, cultivate, solicit, and hold accountable volunteer leaders to achieve the agreed upon goals for each market. Ensure that project committees are recruited and formed based on the market fundraising plan and mission initiatives.
  • Provide leadership to foster communication and positive relationships between the Regional Board, local Leadership Boards and the National Board of Directors.
  • Lead successful, effective and consistent cause campaign awareness building, special event implementation, corporate/foundation partnership development and individual donor cultivation and recognition throughout the region using proven-effective best practices.
  • Lead nationally-designed LUNG FORCE fundraising activities throughout California.
  • Work together with the Nationwide Corporate/Foundation Development team identify, cultivate and solicit a personal portfolio of local corporate prospects with an emphasis on meeting and/or exceeding personal, regional and nationwide corporate revenue goals.
  • Work together with the Nationwide Individual Giving Team, develop, cultivate and solicit a personal portfolio of individuals for mid-level, major and/or planned gifts with an emphasis on meeting and/or exceeding personal, regional and nationwide individual constituent revenue goals.
  • Ensure that there is a coordinated effort in mission delivery and fundraising throughout the entire region and that local market needs and ideas are communicated through the appropriate channels. Identify managed growth investment opportunities in the region.
  • Serve as the senior staff representative to multiple stakeholders including care providers, policy makers, research community, media, consumers, and program and organization leadership.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy amongst all California staff and volunteers.
  • Assist the Executive Vice President in developing regional and local boards.
  • Serve on nationwide taskforces/workgroups as requested.
  • Prepare quarterly revenue forecast reports for the CEO and the National Chief Development Officer.


  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate the mission and vision of the American Lung Association.
  • Master's degree preferred. Bachelor's degree with a minimum of ten years of non-profit development work with five years senior management experience.
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets in excess of $20M and in building constituency within donors, volunteers, event participants and corporate partners.
  • Proven effective communicator, articulate and persuasive verbally and in writing.
  • Must have prior experience in peer-to-peer special events, corporate partnerships and individual donor development.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically lead a team to success.
  • Experience with remote management.
  • Strong experience in volunteer recruitment and engagement.
  • Experience in cultivating and soliciting individual donors.
  • Ability to meet American Lung Association’s standards of excellence, professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to work as a critical part of a larger, nationwide team, building a strong working relationship between the California and the national office.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequently changing deadlines with ease and adaptability.
  • Proactive and service oriented with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to ensure the confidentiality and security of all employee, constituent and organizational information.
  • Extensive analytical skills.
  • Short and long-term planning skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout the region and to national meetings (60%).
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Computer literate with a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Valid driver’s license.
